The German Navy recognized the Thames as an important shipping route and sought to disrupt its usage through the use of a new secret weapon — the magnetic influence mine. Essentially these mines were detonated by the presence of a large metallic object, like that of a steel-hulled ship. This meant that the mines could detonate with ships in close proximity, not having to actually make physical contact to be effective.
Hundreds of ships were sunk by these innovative mines and the Allies needed a solution, fast. Knowing the mines were laid by aircraft, Guy Maunsell (1884-1961), a British civil engineer, produced plans for offshore defences. After some modifications his plans were approved and the Maunsell Sea Forts and Army Towers were born. The timbers are in place allowing workers to scale the structure for adding extra layers of clay, as clay and timbers are the only materials from which this building is made. The mosque sits on the edge of the old city, and because of a nearby highly polluted stream, is surrounded by nasty odors. Currently restoration is ongoing on the Old Mosque of Bobo, as locals call it, but not in traditional style, as cement is being used, instead of mud.

2,500 year walled city of Khiva

2,500 year walled city of Khiva

Marrakech in present-day Morocco. It is situated in Souss-Massa-Drâa on a hill along the Ounila River and is known for its kasbahs, although they take damage with each rainstorm. It’s impossible to determine exactly how old the Kasbahs are, though the first buildings at Ait Benhaddou are believed to have been built since the 11th century. The area was a strategic position on the route from Marrakech, through Telouet, Aït Benhaddou is a fortified city, or ksar, along the former caravan route between the Sahara and to Ouarzazate and the south. Appearing from the barren desert landscape, the Kasbahs were a major stop for camel caravans carrying salt through the Sahara and returning with gold, silver and slaves.

The Great Mosque of Djenné is a large mud brick or adobe...

The Great Mosque of Djenné is a large mud brick or adobe building that is considered by many architects to be one of the the greatest achievement of the Sudano-Sahelian architectural style. The mosque is located in the city of Djenné, Mali, on the flood plain of the Bani River. The first mosque on the site was built around the 13th century, but the current structure dates from 1907. As well as being the centre of the community of Djenné, it is one of the most famous landmarks in Africa. Along with the “Old Towns of Djenné” it was designated aWorld Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1988.

Taos Pueblo

Taos Pueblo

Arg-é Bam: World largest Adobe Building

Arg-é Bam: World largest Adobe Building

Shibam:Ancient Manhatten of Desert

Shibam:Ancient Manhatten of Desert

The Kizhi Pogost enclosure holds two wooden churches and an...

The Kizhi Pogost enclosure holds two wooden churches and an octagonal bell tower built during the 18th-century. The jewel of its architecture is the 22-domed Transfiguration Church with a large iconostasis—a wooden screen covered with religious portraits. This massive church is about 37 meters tall and made entirely of wood making it one of the tallest log structures in the world.
The Church of the Transfiguration was laid in June, 1714, after the old one was burnt by lightning. Its major basic structural unit is a round log of Scots Pine about 30 cm in diameter and 3 to 5 meters long. Many thousands of logs were brought for construction from the mainland, a complex logistical task in that time. A legend tells that the main builder used one axe for the whole construction, which he threw into the lake upon completion with the words “there was not and will be not another one to match it”.

Papakōlea Beach: The green sand Beach

Papakōlea Beach: The green sand Beach

Deadvlei : Rare earth Phenomenon
